This equestrian statue is to the 12th-century English monarch Richard I (1157-1199), also known as Richard the Lionheart, who reigned from 1189–99. It was created by an Italian sculptor Baron Carlo Marochetti. The bronze statue was sponsored by many subscribers including Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It was erected in October 1860.
