An Egyptian obelisk which, about 3,500 years ago, stood in front of the Temple of the Sun at Heliopolis. When it was being towed to England in 1877, this 'Needle', 68½ feet high and weighing 180 tons, had to be abandoned in the Bay of Biscay during a storm. Its sister column is sited in Central Park, New York. The hieroglyphics record praises of Thothmes III and victories of Rameses the Great.
